Artist Statement

My art practice is rooted in exploring what it takes as a human to live within the deeply entangled and interconnected natural world, rejecting categorization and embracing the messiness. I explore what we can change in our culture that would lead to a more responsible and engaged relationship with nature. Traditional techniques are used to inspect traditional power structures. Taking an eco-feminist approach, I liken my experience as a woman with violence and chase to that of the the trophy predator (tigers, bears, gorillas). I embrace my need to collect and forage by using natural found materials in weavings and mosaics. I use reclaimed and found wood in furniture making. Through material, I connect to the long histories of these mediums whether that is tool making and joinery with wood or the very idea of smearing earth pigments onto surfaces in painting. I enter into conversations of queer ecology and de-centering the human while staying true to the fact that we are inescapably intertwined with the world and must move with mindfulness.
